A Craft Beer Train Journey Through Western Tokyo
Escape central Tokyo's crowds by train with a former conductor and explore local craft beer taprooms along the Chuo Line.
The “passenger” on this journey is you.
Travel comfortably from Shinjuku Station or Tokyo Station on the JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating) with Samurai Guide Sho, who spent 22 years as a conductor on this line.
Once his workplace, the Chuo Line is now the stage for your journey. As the scenery shifts outside the window, step off into everyday Tokyo, away from tourist spots.
At small taprooms along the line, savor craft beer brewed by local microbreweries while taking in each town's atmosphere. Bring local food into the taprooms to enjoy with your beer.
This is more than a craft beer crawl. The train ride and time in each town form a private railway journey just for your group.
No beer expertise is needed. Just take your time to enjoy the rhythm of the Chuo Line, each town's character, and local craft beer in your hand.

From Tokyo or Shinjuku to Everyday Tokyo by Green Car
The journey begins before you reach the first taproom.
Meet Samurai Guide Sho at your selected departure station and step aboard the JR Chuo Line Green Car.
Settle into a spacious seat and watch central Tokyo slowly change outside the window.
High-rise buildings begin to give way to residential neighborhoods. More sky appears between the buildings. The city starts to feel different.
You are moving from tourist Tokyo into everyday Tokyo.
The Green Car offers spacious seating, a restroom, power outlets, and the freedom to eat and drink on board.
But its real value is not only in the comfort.
This is not simply time spent getting to the next place.
It is time to notice Tokyo changing around you.
On many tours, the train is simply transportation.
On this journey, the story begins the moment you get on.

Another Side of Tokyo, One Stop at a Time
Many travelers experience Tokyo through famous places such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, Asakusa, Ginza, and Akihabara.
This journey takes you in a different direction.
Travel west on the JR Chuo Line, and Tokyo begins to change one stop at a time.
You may not find famous landmarks here.
Instead, you find station streets, residential neighborhoods, local shops, and taprooms filled with people who live nearby.
These are not places built around sightseeing.
They are part of everyday Tokyo.
And a beer tasted here becomes more than just a beer.
The air when you step off the train.
The street you walked down.
The atmosphere inside the taproom.
The people around you.
All of it becomes part of the memory of that glass.
Tokyo does not reveal itself all at once.
It changes one stop, one neighborhood, and one glass at a time.
Why Travel with a Former JR Chuo Line Conductor?
For Samurai Guide Sho, the JR Chuo Line is not a route chosen from a guidebook.
It was his workplace.
Sho spent 23 years with JR East, including 22 years working as a conductor on the JR Chuo Line.
He experienced the railway from inside the trains, from the platforms, through the windows, and through the everyday journeys of the people who used the line.
Over the years, he came to know its rhythm.
The atmosphere of different stations.
The way Tokyo gradually changes as you travel west from Shinjuku.
Those are things a map cannot fully show you.
For many years, Sho helped people travel along this line as part of their everyday lives.
Today, he uses the same railway to guide you into that everyday Tokyo.
That is why this is not simply a craft beer crawl.
The JR Chuo Line itself is part of the journey.
And this time, the “passenger” is you.

No Beer Expertise Required
You do not need to know anything about craft beer to enjoy this journey.
You do not need to memorize hop varieties.
You do not need to understand brewing techniques.
And you do not need the “right” words to describe what you taste.
You only need to try it for yourself.
Taste a locally brewed beer while you are still in the place it comes from.
Notice the room.
The people around you.
The feeling of having just walked through the neighborhood outside.
The mood you are in that day.
The same beer can become a different memory depending on where and how you drink it.
There is no need to analyze every glass.
Try it.
If you like it, enjoy it.
If it is not for you, that is part of the discovery too.
This journey is not about learning the “right” answer.
It is about finding your own taste.

Choose Your Beer and Your Own Pace
You can book Guide Only and pay for your own beers, or choose Beer-Included with 3 craft beers per guest, in any size. The total can be shared within your private group.
Both options leave the choice of beer to you.
There is no predetermined tasting selection.
Look at the menu and choose the beer that genuinely catches your attention.
One light beer may be enough.
You may want to explore several different styles.
Or you may simply decide that you have had enough.
There is no predetermined tasting order, and you may choose whether to order more.
Choose what you want and drink at your own pace. With Guide Only, you pay for your drinks; with Beer-Included, additional orders beyond the included total are paid separately.
That freedom is part of the journey.
Local Food, Paired Your Way
The taprooms selected for this journey allow outside food, so you can pick up something local along the way and bring it with you.
Choose a local specialty.
A simple snack.
Or just something that looks as though it might taste good with the beer in your hand.
You do not need to know the rules of food pairing.
You do not need anyone to tell you what the “correct” combination is.
In your glass is beer from the area.
In your hand is local food you chose for yourself.
Try them together and see what you think.
That is enough.
Take a Piece of the Journey Home
If you find a canned beer you especially like during the journey, you can take it with you.
Sho provides a cooler bag to keep it chilled until the return Green Car ride.
But this is more than simply buying a beer.
It can be a small reminder of the neighborhood you walked through, the taproom you enjoyed, and the glass you tasted there.
Later, after the journey is over, you may open that can again.
And with that first sip, a little of that day in Tokyo may come back.
Buying takeaway beer is completely optional.
The cost of canned beer is not included in the tour price.
A Flexible Route Connected as One Journey
The taprooms, number of stops, and order of visits may change depending on opening days, temporary closures, seating availability, conditions on the day, and the group’s pace.
The goal is not to visit as many places as possible.
Take the train.
Walk through a neighborhood.
Talk with local people.
Taste a beer.
Then get back on the train and let the journey continue.
There is no need to rush through any of it.
The scenery changes.
The atmosphere changes.
The people change.
And the flavor in your glass changes with them.
Rather than collecting venues, you experience those changes as one connected journey.

A Different Kind of Craft Beer Journey
This is not a loud pub crawl.
And the goal is not to drink as much as possible.
It is a daytime journey along the JR Chuo Line, walking through local neighborhoods and tasting beer brewed in the area while you are still there.
You may already love craft beer.
You may simply be curious about it.
You may enjoy trains, local neighborhoods, or discovering parts of Tokyo beyond the famous tourist areas.
No specialist knowledge is required.
The point is not to remember every beer as a piece of information.
It is to remember the place where you drank it.
The streets.
The atmosphere.
The people.
And how that glass tasted to you in that moment.
If what you take home is not only more knowledge about beer, but also a piece of Tokyo you walked through and tasted for yourself, that is enough.

Before Your Tour
All participants must be aged 20 or older.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
A physical Suica or PASMO card is recommended for a smoother Green Car experience.
We recommend loading about ¥4,000 per person onto your Suica or PASMO card for transportation.
If you choose Guide Only or order extra beers, plan for additional drink costs; a glass is often around ¥1,000.
Please budget according to how much you expect to drink and whether you plan to purchase food.
Credit cards are accepted at all taprooms.
Although the tour takes place during the daytime, please take extra care on station stairs and while walking after drinking alcohol.
